I worked for a luxury retailer before joining Heathrow. In many ways, it was a natural progression. I had enjoyed being part of an organisation that prided itself on excellent service – and the same is definitely true of Heathrow. There is a relentless focus here on providing passengers with the best airport service possible.
My internship offered me a huge range of experiences. I was based within the Commercial team, where I was able to work on various property and retail projects, as well as on passenger insights. I also got involved in a number of fundraising events, which I really enjoyed. This included a “Midnight Marathon” at the airport, and our “Race the Plane” event, in which teams from across Heathrow attempted to cycle the distance from London to New York in less time than a plane.
The variety on offer at Heathrow is excellent. When I progressed from my internship onto the Future Leaders Programme, I was able to explore a whole new range of business areas, as I rotated through placements in Terminal 5 Customer Relations and Service, Procurement and the Human Resources team. My current role is in something different again: Strategy.
How can we make our processes even simpler? That’s the question that I am working on right now, as Process Improvement Lead for our Simpler Heathrow programme. The aim is to free up time for colleagues so they are able to give even more focus to their jobs.
I would thoroughly recommend the internship programme to anyone considering it. You’d be amazed how much you can achieve in that one year. Another thing I really enjoyed about the experience was the number of different people it enabled me to meet, many of whom have become great friends of mine.
